What is meant with being highly gifted or talented?Being highly gifted is a combination of having a high IQ, a big creativity and the persistence and concentration to work for a long time at one particular task. Being highly gifted is so much more than having an IQ above 130: it’s a mixture of qualities. There are a lot of myths about talented or highly gifted people. A lot of people think that being highly gifted is a privilege, but this is not always the case. Talented pupils need a lot of support and stimulation, otherwise they might get bored and this can result to underachieving. That’s why a lot of pupils end up in studies that aren’t high enough for them. Being highly gifted isn’t always a real gift. The expression “highly gifted” hasn’t been discovered and acknowledged that long ago. But luckily we see that during the last few years there were some initiatives to stimulate and help talented children during their education. In primary school so-called “kangaroo classes” are founded and in secondary school gifted pupils get a possibility to do project work. Despite all these good intentions, there is still a lot of work to do to give these pupils what they deserve: an adjusted education. Home |
