The Lapro-projectTo guide talented pupils and to give them the challenges they need, the “Koninklijk Atheneum Tongeren” organizes a special education for them. This initiative was started after 2002, when parents of gifted children asked for a special guidance for their children. The project was named LAPRO: LAtin PROject, because the first pupils had to study Latin. Nowadays pupils can also choose a different main subject at school, but the name didn’t change. Some information about the project:In the first and second level (the first four years of secondary school) the pupils work at joint and individual projects. The classes are on Wednesday in the morning. The pupils of the first level have 4 hours and the pupils of the second level three hours. During these lessons the pupils aren’t involved in a typical lesson. The teachers are actually coaching the pupils in their project. This way the pupils get a chance to develop skills that they can’t develop during regular lessons. In the third level (the last two years of secondary school) the pupils get a chance to go deeply into their own interests. Even outside the school the pupils can work on their project. For example: pupils can attend classes at a college of higher education or a university, without being called a “student” or the pupils can “work” in a company or organisation. The hours of project in the last level are much more flexible and are divided in another way, per project. The pupils that miss regular lessons because of their project should update their lessons themselves. Obviously pupils can also choose to continue the project work the way they did in the first two levels: work at a project in school. Another possibility is that pupils of the third level help pupils of the first two levels with their projects. The older pupils support the younger ones. They help them and are called godfather or godmother. This experience is very instructive for both pupils. Although a lot of independence is expected, the pupils can still count on the support and the guidance of a teacher. Home |
